Web CT is a Web-based software programme that was originally developed in Columbia by Murray Goldberg in 1995.It was first integrated into the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in 2000.

According to Antoinette van Deventer E- learning responsible in an interview set in 2010, as part of a  Media Studies research  topic, the main reason behind WebCT was about getting extra tools, trying something new and being in phase with new technological development.

The adoption of this new product (WebCT) was something that incommensurably revolutionnised the condition of academic learning. Not all African Countries have actually made use of that innovative technology yet. South Africa is therefore in line with the different tools used worldwide and can actually compete with the other higher institution of education.

The first version adopted by CPUT was WebCT4.This later, comprises of the basics of e learning element intended for assisting educators to deal with courses and the different work conducted online in a more effective manner.

The use of WebCT undeniably helped a lot in reaching a certain improvement in terms of study mentoring. For instance, this new system improved the learning programme by monitoring student’s progress and also by making course material and evaluations accessible for the facilitation of both students and lecturers.
